Straight answers about habits.
Common questions about habits, answered in the first sentence, with the research behind each answer and what Rewarding Habits actually does.
- What happens to my progress if I miss a day or travel?A missed day breaks nothing, and neither does a trip. Each habit's ocean on your phone is built from the completions you've logged, whenever they happened.
- What happens when I come back to a habit after a break? You pick up where you left off. Nothing on your phone resets while you're away, and your first completion back gets a warmer welcome from your ocean.
- Why do random rewards work?A surprise keeps its pull. Dopamine is more responsive to unpredictable rewards, and behavior rewarded on an unpredictable schedule tends to persist.
- How long does it take to form a habit? There's no single number. In the best-known study, a daily habit took a median of about 66 days to feel automatic, with estimates from 18 to 254 days.
- How do you quit a bad habit without relying on willpower?Replace the habit rather than only resisting it: choose something to do instead, plan for the moments that set it off, and let urges pass without a fight.
- Is there a habit tracker without streaks?Yes. Rewarding Habits has no streak counter anywhere: every completion is rewarded with a surprise, and a missed day breaks nothing.
- Do streaks make people give up?Not everyone. The research, and what it does and doesn't show, is on our science page.
